Who Is This Jesus? Lesson 5

Apostle

The word apostle means one who is sent on a mission. Jesus was sent by God the father. Therefore, he was called an apostle. When he called the twelve disciples and commission them to go, he called them apostles
Hebrews 3:1
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.
Luke 9.1-2
When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Prophet

He was able to see and predict things of the future. He was able to speak for God. Christ would be a prophet like Moses. Peter and the woman at the well confirmed that Jesus was a prophet.
Deuteronomy 18:15-18
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” The LORD said to me: “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him.
Acts 3:22-26

Savior

The word saviour means, one who saves, delivers and rescues from sin.
Luke 2:10-11
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Ephesians 5:23
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Rabbi/Teacher/Rabboni

All these three words mean teacher and master
John 3:1-2
Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
John 13:13
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
John 20:16
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

Lord

Jesus is master and ruler. He has been given all authority and power. The declaration of Jesus as "Lord" and "Christ" affirms His divine authority and messianic role. "Lord" (Kyrios in Greek) is a title of divinity and sovereignty, often used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew name for God, Yahweh. "Christ" (Christos in Greek) means "Anointed One," equivalent to the Hebrew "Messiah." This dual title confirms Jesus as the promised deliverer and ruler, fulfilling prophecies.
Acts 2:36
“Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
Acts 9:5
“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.
John 13:13
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.

Mediator

A mediator stands between or represents two parties to reason, make representation and plead. Moses was the mediator between God and Israel.
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.
Deuteronomy 5:1-5
Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. It was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. (At that time, I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.

Stone

This stone is a solid rock foundation. It is not a pebble. In the Greek language, there is petra and petros. Peter is petros, it means a pebble, a stone, but Jesus is petra, a solid rocky foundation.
Matthew 16:18
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
1 Peter 2:7-8
Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message which is also what they were destined for.
1 Peter 2:4
If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
John 1:42

Bread of life

The metaphor of "bread" is deeply rooted in Jewish culture, symbolizing sustenance and life. Jesus positions Himself as essential for spiritual life, surpassing the temporary satisfaction of physical bread.
John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

The way

Jesus declares Himself as the exclusive path to God, emphasizing His role as the mediator between humanity and the Father. He is how man can come to God. He is the avenue by which we come to God.
John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus

The truth

In claiming to be the truth, Jesus asserts His identity as the ultimate revelation of God. He came to reveal the truth who God is. He also came to reveal truth, the word of God as revealed in the New Testament. Both the written and living word (Jesus) are called truth.
John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth .
Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

The life

Jesus as the life signifies His power over death and His role as the source of eternal life. This is consistent with His earlier declarations, where He states, "I am the resurrection and the life." The life Jesus offers is not merely physical but spiritual and eternal, fulfilling the promise of abundant life. Jesus promises us spiritual life.
John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;

The light

Light symbolizing God's presence, guidance, and truth. Jesus' claim positions Him as the divine source of spiritual illumination and guidance for all humanity, surpassing the physical light of the sun, moon and starts.
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The rock

The "spiritual rock" is a reference to Christ, who is seen as the source of spiritual sustenance. The rock "accompanied them" suggests Jesus continual presence and provision throughout the Israelites' journey after they left Egypt. It also confirms the pre-existence of Jesus before he was born of Mary. Paul explicitly identifies the rock as Christ, emphasizing the pre-existence and active involvement of Christ in the Old Testament. This highlights Christ as the source of life and sustenance, both physically and spiritually. The water that came from the rock was miraculously done. It was Christ providing for his people.
1 Corinthians 10:3-4
They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
The wisdom of God
Here, Christ is identified as the wisdom of God, contrasting with human wisdom. Paul asserts that true wisdom is found in Christ, who reveals God's redemptive plan. This wisdom is hidden from the wise and learned but revealed to those with childlike faith
1 Corinthias 1:23-24
But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Jesus is the Power of God

This phrase emphasizes that Christ embodies the power of God, which is contrary to human expectations of power. However, the power of God is demonstrated through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, which appears as foolishness to those who do not believe. This power is transformative, bringing salvation and new life to believers. It is through Jesus Christ God is saving those who believe.
1 Corinthians 1:23-24
But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Jesus is the wisdom of God

Here, Christ is identified as the wisdom of God, contrasting with human wisdom. In Jewish tradition, wisdom is personified in the book of Proverbs and is associated with the fear of the Lord. Greek culture highly valued philosophical wisdom, yet Paul asserts that true wisdom is found in Christ, who reveals God's redemptive plan. This wisdom is hidden from the wise and learned but revealed to those with childlike faith. It fulfills the prophecy of a coming Messiah who would embody divine wisdom. It was predicted in Isaiah concerning Jesus, from Jesse, a root would arise. He would be a person of wisdom.
Isaiah 11:1-2
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD.

Last Adam

Adam, as the first human created by God, is a central figure in biblical history. Genesis describes how God formed Adam from the dust and breathed life into him, making him a "living being. The term "last Adam" refers to Jesus Christ, drawing a parallel between Adam and Christ. While Adam is the first man, Christ is seen as the culmination and fulfillment of God's plan for humanity. Where Adam brought sin and death into the world through disobedience, Christ brings life and righteousness through His obedience and sacrifice. Jesus is compared to Adam. The first Adam brought physical death, but the second Adam (Jesus) brought eternal life.
1 Corinthians 15:45-49
So, it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.
Romans 5:17-19

Wonderful Counselor

The title "Wonderful Counselor" suggests wisdom and guidance beyond human understanding. It implies that the Messiah will provide divine counsel and direction. In the New Testament, Jesus is often depicted as a teacher and guide, offering wisdom through His parables and teachings. This title reflects His role in providing spiritual guidance and insight.
Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Matthew 7:28-29
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Mighty God

This title affirms the deity of the Messiah, identifying Him as God Himself. It aligns with the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, where Jesus is recognized as fully God. The term "Mighty" conveys strength and power, attributes of God seen throughout the Old Testament. This title underscores the belief in Jesus' divine authority and power. Jesus is called God. The father is also called God. God the father called the son God.
Isaiah 9:6

Hebrews 1:6-8

Everlasting Father

This title can be understood as the Messiah's eternal nature and His role as a fatherly figure to His people. It does not imply that the Son is the Father in the Trinitarian sense, but rather highlights His care, protection, and eternal existence. Everlasting Father refers to the eternal nature of Jesus. He was from the beginning of time. Jesus is the source of all things. All things were created by him. He always existed. He is not God the father. The two are different.

Prince of Peace

The title "Prince of Peace" signifies the Messiah's role in bringing peace to the world. It reflects the peace that Jesus offers through reconciliation with God.

Door

In this declaration, Jesus identifies Himself as the exclusive means of access to spiritual safety and eternal life. Good Shepperd

In this declaration, Jesus identifies Himself as the "good shepherd," a title rich with Old Testament imagery. God condemns the false shepherds of Israel and promises to be the true shepherd for His people. Jesus fulfills this prophecy, presenting Himself as the divine shepherd who genuinely cares for His flock. The term "good" (Greek: kalos) implies nobility and moral excellence, distinguishing Jesus from mere hired hands or false leaders.
John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Chief Shepperd

The term "Chief Shepherd" refers to Jesus Christ, highlighting His role as the ultimate leader and caretaker of His flock, the Church. This imagery of shepherding is deeply rooted in biblical tradition, with leaders like Moses and David also being shepherds. Chief in this context refers to Jesus as the main leader of the church.
1 Peter 5:4
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

True Vine

By declaring Himself the "true vine," Jesus identifies Himself as the genuine source of spiritual life and sustenance, contrasting with Israel, often depicted as a vine in the Old Testament. The imagery of the vine was familiar in Jewish culture, symbolizing God's chosen people. Jesus positions Himself as the fulfillment and embodiment of what Israel was meant to be a fruitful, life-giving presence in the world.
John 15:1
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

I am the vine and you are the branches

This metaphor of the vine and branches is deeply rooted in the agricultural context of ancient Israel, where vineyards were common. The vine represents Jesus, and the branches symbolize His followers. In the Old Testament, Israel is often depicted as a vine or vineyard.
John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

The first born of creation

The term "firstborn" here is not about chronological birth order but rather signifies pre-eminence and authority. In ancient cultures, the firstborn son held a place of honor, supremacy, pre-eminence, dominion and authority and inheritance rights. Biblically, this term is used to denote supremacy and priority. God says He will make David the "firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth." David was not the first child of Jessie. In the context of Colossians, it underscores Christ's authority over all creation, affirming His role in creation itself. This phrase also refutes early heresies that attempted to diminish Christ's divine nature, asserting instead His eternal existence and sovereign rule over the universe. Some also teach that Jesus was born of a wife God has in heaven. Jesus is the ruler and originator of creation.
Colossians 1:16-18
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created : things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
Psalm 89:27
And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.

The holy child Jesus

The term "holy servant" emphasizes Jesus' role as the Messiah and His sinless nature. Holiness and servanthood are central to His mission and identity. The words holy and perfect are used interactable in the bible. Jesus possesses the divine quality of holiness or complete perfection. This divine quality of holiness is sinlessness. It is perfect holiness. He is the only person to have lived in the flesh and did not sin. He was tried and tempted but he did not sin.
Acts 4:27
Indeed, Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
Matthew 4:1-3
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Hebrews 4:14-15
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. The holiness of Christians

Man is holy, and he is called to live a life of holiness or perfection. This life of holiness or perfection is not sinlessness. We will sin in life. But we are called to live a life that reflects God in our lives.
Ecclesiastes 7:20
Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Working on and walking in holiness

Christian holiness is a work in progress. It is a life that we live daily, where we are instructed to remove the old man of sin, and replace it with the new man that reflects Jesus. Because he is holy, we are to reflect holiness in our lives. This holiness is also translated as blameless or above reproach. Elders are also called upon to be blameless. Abraham was called to walk blameless before God.
Genesis 17:1
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be blameless. (NIV)

Names and titles associated with Jesus

Each name and title tell us something of the divinity or humanity of Jesus. Some of these names and titles are used as figures of speech; metaphors, symbols and similes.

Lion of the tribe of Judah
The "Lion" symbolizes strength, majesty, and kingship. This title is rooted in Genesis, where Jacob blesses his son Judah, prophesying that the scepter, rulership and kingship will not depart from him. This establishes a messianic expectation that the Messiah would come from Judah's lineage. The tribe of Judah gave Israel kings. Jesus was born in the tribe of Judah .
Revelation 5:5
Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah , the Root of David, has triumphed. He can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Genesis 49:9-10
You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness who dares to rouse him? The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

Lamb of God

This title, "Lamb of God," is rich with Old Testament symbolism and sacrificial imagery. It alludes to the Passover lamb and the daily sacrifices in the temple. The lamb represents innocence, sacrifice, and atonement, pointing to Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. When John the Baptist saw him, he said, “The lamb of God.

Revelation 5:6
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Emmanuel

The name "Immanuel" means "God is with us," signifying the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus Christ. This name reflects the profound truth that God has come to dwell among His people.
Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Word

The term "Word" (Logos in Greek) is rich in meaning. In Jewish thought, the Word of God is associated with creation, revelation and salvation. The Word is not merely a spoken word but a person, as later verses reveal, who is active in the world. This declaration affirms the full divinity of the Word. It is a clear statement of the Word's divine nature, asserting that the Word is not a lesser deity or a created being but fully God. Jesus is the word and he is God .
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Hebrews 1:3
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Colossians 2:9
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,

King

Jesus confirmed that he was born to be king. His response to Pilate is both an affirmation and a subtle redirection. He acknowledges Pilate's words but implies that His kingship is not of this world. This statement aligns with the spiritual nature of His kingdom, which is not based on earthly power or political structures. It also fulfills prophecies, which speaks of a humble king. He entered in the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Jesus is now king. His kingdom is spiritual not physical
John 18:36-37
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this because I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

Jesus was a humble king

The week of his death, he entered in Jerusalem with great humility. The king was riding on a donkey, a lowly animal. He did not come riding in a chariot or on a horse.
Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Matthew 21:9
The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
John 12:13
They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”

High Priest

The High Priest was the chief, the highest ranked and the leader of the priests. Aaron was the first High Priest in Israel. The High Priest came from the tribe of Levi. That system of priesthood that served God was called the Levitical Priesthood. Jesus was born in the tribe of Judah. He was not qualified to be a priest. God had to change the law and the Levitical Priesthood to allow Jesus to be a High Priest. Jesus is a High Priest in a different Priesthood. Jesus is now serving as a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 5:7-10
During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:11-14
If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek , not in the order of Aaron? For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
Hebrews 3:1
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus

Christ

The term "Christ" is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew "Messiah," meaning "Anointed One." This title signifies Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming Savior and King. In Jewish expectation, the Messiah was anticipated to be a political and spiritual leader who would deliver Israel. Peter's recognition of Jesus as the Christ indicates a profound understanding that Jesus is the promised deliverer and savior. He came not to physically deliver the nation of Israe from the Romans, but people from sin. Most people do not know or understand that Christ is not the surname or second name for Jesus. We say Jesus Christ. Christ means Messiah.
Matthew 16:16
Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Acts 17:2-3
Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”

The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you I am he.”

Son of Living God

This phrase "Son of God" implies a unique and intimate relationship with God the Father, affirming Jesus' divinity. The use of "living God" contrasts the God of Israel with the lifeless idols of surrounding nations. This declaration connects to other scriptural affirmations of Jesus' divine sonship. This is central to Christian doctrine regarding the Trinity and the nature of Christ.
Matthew 16:16
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Son of Mary and Joseph

Mary and Joseph recognized Jesus as their son. In the same context Jesus called God his father. Why were the parents confused?
Luke 2:48-50
When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “ Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Matthew 13:53-56
When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son ? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”

Jesus

The name "Jesus" is the Greek form of the Hebrew name "Yeshua" or "Joshua," meaning "The Lord is salvation" or "Yahweh saves." Thus, the word means saviour. This name was divinely appointed, where the angel Gabriel instructs Mary to name her child Jesus. The name signifies His mission to bring salvation to humanity, aligning with the Old Testament theme of God as the deliverer of His people. Jesus means saviour.
Matthew 1:21
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Luke 1:30-31
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.

Messiah

The term "Messiah" is derived from the Hebrew word "Mashiach," meaning "anointed one." This reflects the woman's understanding of Jewish and Samaritan expectations of a coming deliverer. Despite the religious differences, both groups anticipated a figure who would bring salvation and restoration.

Son of David

"Hosanna" is a Hebrew expression meaning "save now" or "save, we pray." It is both a plea for salvation and an exclamation of praise. The title "Son of David" acknowledges Jesus as the promised Messiah, a descendant of King David, fulfilling the covenant God made with David. Thus, Jesus is a king from the family of David. Jesus was not the biological son of David. He came from the family tree of David.
Matthew 21:9
The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”
2 Samuel 7:12-16

Son of Man

The term "Son of Man" is a messianic title, emphasizing Jesus' authority and divine nature. The Son of Man is more than he was born of man, Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem, but he was God among men. He was the Immanuel. Refers to Jesus taking fleshly qualities and living as God among men on earth. This title is used both in the Old and New Testament.
Matthew 24:30
“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.
Daniel 7:13-14
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. Jesus shared equality with God the father

That equality Jesus shared was lowered when he took on human form. There was a reason why he took human form. He had to become like us, live in the flesh to suffer and experience human death. The assertion of being "one" with the Father is a profound declaration of Jesus' divinity. The Greek word for "one" (hen) used here implies unity of essence or nature, not merely agreement or purpose. Every quality that is in God the father is also in God the son.
Philippians 2:5-8
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God , did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross!

The equality of Jesus with God was a problem

The Jews misunderstood the union and relationship of God the father and God the Son. So, they tried to kill him, because he made himself equal with God.
John 10:30-31 I and the Father are one.” Again, his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
John 5:18
Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him . Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
John 17:21-23
That all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one. I in them and You in Me that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.

The father is greater than the son

This phrase has been the subject of much discussion. It emphasizes the functional subordination of the Son to the Father during His earthly ministry, without implying inequality in essence or nature. This aligns with the doctrine of the Trinity, where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are co-equal and co-eternal. The statement reflects Jesus' humility and obedience, where He willingly submits to the Father's will.
John 14:28
“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
1 Corinthians 11:3
But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God .

Jesus is the image of the father

Jesus is the precise imprint of God's essence. The Greek term used here refers to an engraving or stamp, indicating that Jesus embodies God's character and attributes fully. This describes Christ as the image of the invisible God. It underscores the belief in the Trinity, where Jesus is distinct yet fully God. The phrase Jesus is the image of God, emphasizes the unique nature of Jesus Christ as the perfect representation of God. In biblical context, "image" implies a likeness or representation. Jesus embodies the fullness of God, making the invisible God known to humanity. When Jesus responded to Philip, that he should show him the father, he was looking at what God the father is all about, and looks like in divine qualities. It is not that Jesus and God the father are the same person.
John 14:9
Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still, you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Hebrews 1:3
Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high
Colossians 1:15
The Son is the image of the invisible God , the firstborn over all creation.

Things the father knows but the son does not know

During the time when the son took on flesh, he lowered himself. Thus, there were things only the father in the relationship knew. That does not dimmish his divinity. This final phrase asserts the unique authority and knowledge of God the Father. It emphasizes the distinct roles within the Trinity, where the Father holds certain knowledge and authority. This aligns with the biblical portrayal of God as the ultimate sovereign, who alone determines the times and seasons. The exclusivity of the Father's knowledge serves to remind believers of the need for trust and faith in God's perfect plan and timing, encouraging them to live in a state of readiness and anticipation for the fulfillment of His promises.
Matthew 24:36
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Acts 1:7
Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.

Jesus was worshipped

Worship is reserved for God. Since Jesus was worshiped and accepted it, that makes him God, and equal with God.
Matthew 4:10
Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘ Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
Matthew 2:11
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him . Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 28:8-9
So, the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him .

Jesus was before Abraham

People and religious leaders who heard Jesus misunderstood him. They saw him as mere human. They did not understand that he was God dwelling among men. He existed before he came to earth. That was difficult for people to understand.
John 8:56-59
Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Jesus was sent

Jesus was sent to earth to do the work of the father. In the relationship that exist in the trinity, there is a sent and a sender. The sender is not the sent, and the sent is not the sender. They are two distinct persons but they work as one.
John 6:38-39
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me . And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
John 4:34
Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
John 8:29
He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
John 14:26
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father he will testify about me.
John 15:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Jesus and power

Power and authority were given to Jesus. Who gave him the authority? The giver of power is not the same person who is receiving power. At the end, he will give back that authority.
Matthew 28:18
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
1 Corinthains 15:24
Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

Jesus is called God

The scriptures confirm that Jesus is God. He has all the fullness of God in him. He cannot be God and a created being at the same time.
Hebrews 1:8
But about the Son he says, “ Your throne, O God , will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
Isaiah 9:6-7
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Jesus existed before creation

Jesus was there before anything or anyone was created. A decision was made for him to be the sacrifice for sin. He did not choose himself to be the sacrifice for sin. When Adam fell, things were set in motion for him to come to the world.
1 Peter 1:18-21
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world , but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus is the ruler and origin of God’s creation
Creation came from Jesus He brought creation into existence. He rules creation. Therefore, he is the creator.
Revelation 3:14
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Origin of the creation of God, says this:

The sonship of Jesus

God has many sons. All persons born and brought into the world are called sons of God. Both men and women are called sons of God. Jesus is a special son. John called him the only begotten. The Greek word monogenes is used, and it means; only begotten, one of a kind or type, unique, one and only. That is used to distinguish Jesus from man, and the unique relationship he has with the father.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
1 John 3:1
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore, the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Physical and spiritual sonship of Jesus

The relationship between God the father and Jesus, has been misunderstood, misinterpreted and twisted, to teach something that the bible does not support. God physically did not give birth to a son. God did not create Jesus. Jesus is creator. He was alongside God creating the world. God is speaking figuratively of the relationship he and Jesus have. A father and son relationship.
Hebrews 1:5
For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?
Psalm 2:7
I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father.

When was Jesus made a son?

This question has been a source of debate. There are many questions. Isaiah predicted that he would be a son. The angel Gabriel announced the conception and birth of a son. God acknowledged and confirmed the sonship of Jesus at his baptism. Was he a son while in heaven and before he came to the world? Was he made a son when he was born of Mary? Was he declared a son when he was baptized?

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given , and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Matthew 1:21

Jesus is greater than the created

Only God is to be worshipped. Since angels worshipped Jesus, he was greater than the created angels. He created them. So, they worshipped him. He is not Michael the arch angel. Michael the arch angel was created.
Hebrews 1:6
And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”
Luke 2:13-14
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Jesus is creator and God

Jesus is God and creator. Any teaching and belief that says or teach other wise is false, twisted and contrary to sound doctrine and scripture. He is God and creator.
Colossians 1:16
For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.

The misunderstood Jesus

Jesus Christ has been misunderstood by some people. His origin and life among men have been misunderstood. Jesus came to earth. He lived among men. He was misunderstood. People have misused and twisted scriptures, to teach and say who Jesus is not, and what the scriptures do not support about him. Why do people have misunderstandings about Jesus?
Matthew 16:13-16
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
2 Peter 3:15-17
Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand , which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.

Jesus co-existed with God the father at creation

Jesus coexisted with two other divine beings in creating all things. All three divine beings are called God. The pronoun us is used to show that God exists with other individuals. The plural pronoun us is never used referring to one person. These three persons are distinct , but they work as one. They are united in what they do.
Genesis 1:26
Then God said, “ Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language, they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

For there are three that bear witness in heaven : the Father , the Word , and the Holy Spirit ; and these three are one .

Jesus is everlasting

The word everlasting in referring to God the father and son, means that they always existed and will always exist. The same as Alpha and Omega. They had no start, origin and beginning of time, neither will they have an end. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem that was not his beginning. He lived before his birth.
Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel , whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting .”
Revelation 22:12-13
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega , the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Jesus is part of Deity and the Godhead

Jesus is part of the three beings that always existed and will always exists. They are called and translated; God, Deity, Divine Being, Divine Nature and the Godhead. They are also called Trinity. The three in one. They share the same divine qualities or nature. One is not more or less than the other. All of what makes up God the father is in Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The three beings in heaven share the same divine qualities. They are like three beans in one pod.
Colossians 2:9
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily
Romans 1:20
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead , so that they are without excuse
Acts 17:29
Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.

Jesus shared in that union and relationship with God the father

God is called the father in that union. He is the leader. God uses human terms to communicate with man. Jesus shared in a relationship with God the father before creation. Jesus called God father.
John 17:1
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “ Father , the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
John 17:5
And now, Father , glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
John 17:24
“ Father , I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
1 Corinthains 11:3
But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God .

Jesus is a son in the Godhead relationship

God uses human terms to communicate with man. God is spirit. He is not physical. When the bible says God has ears and hands, this is not physical. When the bible says; God is a father, it does not mean that he is married to a woman in heaven, and that marital union gave birth to Jesus. Father is used to communicate with man, a father and son relationship that existed. The relationship existed before any thing or person was created. So, Jesus could not have been a created being. God called Israel my son. Israel was not born to God. He served as a father figure to the nation of Israel.
Isaiah 59:1-2
Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son , whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Hosea 11:1
“When Israel was a child , I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son .
Matthew 3:13-15
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So, he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son .”

Jesus was creator and part of creation

Jesus was present when all things were created. The bible confirms that he was the agent by who all things were created. A person cannot be creator and created at the same time. That confirms the use of the plural pronouns us and our in Genesis, when God the father said, “Let us make man in our image.”
John 1:3
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
Colossians 1:16
For in Him all things were created , things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.
Hebrews 1:2
But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe .
1 Corinthians 8:6
Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist.

Jesus is called God

Since all the divine qualities that dwells in the father also dwells in Jesus, both are called God. Again, the preposition with used in John indicates relationship, and shows they live and dwell along side each other. So, when the world was created, Jesus was along side God the father. He could not be created if he was there actively involved in creating the world.
John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word , and the Word was with God , and the Word was God . He was with God in the beginning.

Jesus took human flesh and was given a name

When he took human flesh, a name was given to him, to identify him. Names have purpose and meaning. Bethlehem was not his origin. This teaching is called the Incarnation. God dwelling and manifesting himself in human form.
Matthew 1:20-21
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus , because he will save his people from their sins.”
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The name Jesus was given to him

God the father gave him the name Jesus which means saviour. He came to earth to save. Only God can save. That makes him equal with God the father.
Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Murmuring, Grumbling, Complaining, Criticizing, Arguing and Disagreeing Part 2

Complaining may lead to murmuring

The negative report and complaining of the ten men who visited and surveyed the Promised Land, led to Israel murmuring. The negative things we say can influence people.

Numbers 13:32-33
And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
Numbers 14:1-3
That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”

Dealing with murmuring, grumbling, complaining, criticizing, arguing and disagreeing
Christians are human beings. They have different personalities and may deal with things in different ways. We will face murmuring, grumbling, complaining, criticism, arguments and disagreements. These things can impact and affect us. Some may choose to respond, retaliate, ignore, lash out or have patience. Every situation is different. Each response may have a different reaction. How do we choose the best and appropriate response? How do we apply the words and wisdom of Solomon in these situations? How do we handle these things?

Ecclesiastes 3:1-7
There is a time for everything , and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak .

Complaining, impatience and stress
Complaining can reflect our displeasure and unhappiness about a situation or person. Human beings are difficult to please and satisfy. They can become stressful and impatient. These two things, stress and impatience, they can lead to constant complaining and whining about things. Israel was unhappy about food and water. They constantly worry and complain.

Numbers 20:2-5
Now there was no water for the congregation; so, they gathered against Moses and Aaron. And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying: “If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! Why have you brought up the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink .”
Numbers 21:4-6
They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way ; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.
Matthew 6:25
“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life , what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Complaining, jealousy and envy

Jealousy and envy can cause people to desire power and positions. They will complain. They will have egos. They can influence others to support them in their complaining. There are consequences when we complain and influence others.

Numbers 16:1-4
Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and on son of Peleth became insolent and revolted against Moses . With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?” When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.
Numbers 16:30-34
But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.” As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.

Complaining and misunderstanding
People hear things, they misunderstand them, they are not satisfied, they are unhappy, so they start to grumble, murmur and complain. The disciples heard Jesus talking about eating the bread of life. They did not understand. They started to complain. The Jews heard Jesus, they misunderstood what he was saying. They started to murmur.

John 6:60-61
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you?

Complaining can affect people

Constant complaining can get to people. It can get them on their wrong side to lash out and do what they should not. Moses was a meek and gentle man. The constant complaining of the people caused him to lash out.

Numbers 20:7-13
The LORD said to Moses, “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” So, Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD and where he was proved holy among them.

Complaining and appreciation

People who constantly complain and murmur are ungrateful and not appreciative. They forget the contributions God and man have made. They also lack faith.

Psalm 106:21-26
They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull, which eats grass. They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt, miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea So he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise.

Complaining and comparing
Human beings have the mindset with comparing themselves with others. Martha was complaining about laboring in the kitchen, while Mary sat and listened to Jesus. People complain and compare their work and wages with others.

Luke 10:38-42
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself ? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “ you are worried and upset about many things , but few things are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Matthew 20:1-4
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’
Matthew 20:8-15
“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So, when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner . These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

False teachers and complaining

Jude called those who engage in false teachings as murmurers and complainers.

Jude 1:4
For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
Jude 1:16
These people are grumblers and faultfinders ; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage .

Complain and grievances

A grievance is an official statement of a complaint over something believed to be wrong or unfair. There are situations that will arise where people may feel that their needs and concerns are not being met. They have a responsibility to have it addressed in the proper way and through the right channel. They have a responsibility to express how they feel about a particular situation.

Acts 6:1-5
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So, the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Complaining an example not to follow

We are warned that we should not follow the bad example of Israel that complained about almost everything. There are consequences for complainers

1 Corinthians 10:10-11
Nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

Justifiable and unjustifiable complaining
If what a person is complaining about, is discussed or aired openly, and it is without wrong motives to cause confusion and division, then that will be stating a grievance. That complaining is justified. However, if what a person is complaining about has wrong motives to cause confusion and division, that complaining is wrong and not justified.

Christians are to avoid these negative qualities
These negative qualities do not build. They are destructive. As we work out our salvation, we must avoid these bad qualities.

Philippians 2:12-14
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do everything without grumbling or arguing.

The impact of these negative qualities in a congregation

A local congregation (church) is made of people. These people come from different backgrounds and have different personalities. The membership of a local congregation is made of old, young, strong and weak persons. The strength of a local congregation is built on love, unity and peace. Constant complaining, criticizing, murmuring, grumbling and disagreeing are destructive to a congregation. These things can cause unhappiness, hatred, anger, stress, bitterness and division in a congregation.

Christian Living: Murmuring, Grumbling, Complaining, Criticizing, Arguing and Disagreeing Part 1

What is complaining?

Complaining is a form of communication that expresses dissatisfaction and displeasure about a person or something. It is to make a formal accusation or bringing a formal charge about something or someone. The dissatisfaction maybe objective and based of facts, or it can be subjective and based on how a person feels or thinks.

What is murmuring?

Murmuring is to speak or make low, indistinguishable noise; to grumble, to mumble and mutter accusation of displeasure. Both complaining and murmuring are used in some scriptures to refer to the same thing.

What is grumbling?

Grumbling is to complain about someone or something in an annoyed way, to murmur, to utter low, indistinct sounds, to mutter in discontent and to show strong disagreement.

What is disagreeing?

Disagreeing is to have a stated objection, to hold a different position, to see, interpret or understand things differently. A disagreement may be right or wrong. Disagreements may affect peace between persons. Two sisters in Philippi had a disagreement. Paul encouraged them to unite. How can simple disagreements, if not resolved, affect friendship and the peace of a congregation?

Philippians 4:2
I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.
Romans 12:18
If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.

What is criticizing

Criticizing is the expression of disapproval of someone or something, based on perceived faults or mistakes. It can take the form of analysis and judgement of the merits and faults of what is done and spoken. Criticism can be positive with the intent to help and correct, but it can be negative and destructive.

What is arguing?

Arguing is exchanging diverging or opposing views. These views can be heated or in anger. Arguments can be controversial, confrontational, divisive, have strong differences and quarrelsome. Uncontrolled arguments have created conflicts, divided and destroyed churches.

Titus 3:9
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
James 4:1
What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you?
1 Timothy 6:3-4
If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. Instead, he has an unhealthy interest in controversies and disputes about words, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions

An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.

Similarities and differences of words

Some of these words are closely related. They have different shades of meaning, depending in the context that they are used. However, one can be used in the place of another. Bible translators have used complaining, grumbling and murmuring to mean the same.

Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?

When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you?

Keeping the unity

Unity is important in the survival of the home, relationship, church, school and society and government. A house that is divided cannot survive. Constant murmuring, grumbling, complaining, criticizing, arguing and disagreeing will affect any group, and will cause its downfall and destruction.

Ephesians 4:3
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Mark 3:25
If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

The negative aspect of criticism

Persons who engage in negative criticism can have their minds set to look for; mistakes, faults, dot i’s and cross t’s, and be judgemental. They can miss the good that was intended of what is said and done. Things do not please and satisfy critical people. The Pharisees were critical of Jesus. The Corinthians were critical of Paul.

Luke 7:33-34
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
1 Corinthians 9:1-3
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely, I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

Why do people complain and murmur?

People may complain and murmur for different reasons. People complain and murmur because they have a just and legitimate reason. Some may do it out of; anger, grudge, hate, malice, jealousy and bitterness.

The negative of complaining

Persons who are engaged in constant complaining will develop a negative mindset. They will see the dark grey skies, the sun, stars and moon will not shine in their eyes. They will become discouragers and not encouragers. Things cannot be done or will never be done. They see all the impossibilities in life. They often have an inferiority complex. The ten spices saw all the bad things in the land. Their negative mindset caused them to see giants and grasshoppers. They presented an evil report when they made their report to Moses and Aaron

Numbers 13:26-31
They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.” Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”
Deuteronomy 1:26-28
But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You grumbled in your tents and said, “The LORD hates us; so, he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.’”

Christian Living: Fasting Part 2

Motives for fasting

Persons may fast with different and wrong motives. They may put on a show to impress on others. They fast but their lives are not right with God. Their fasting becomes worthless. Jesus condemned that behaviour.

Isaiah 58:3-4
“Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we humbled ourselves, and You have not noticed?” “Behold, on the day of your fast, you do as you please, and you oppress all your workers. You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot fast as you do today and have your voice be heard on high .
Jeremiah 14:11-12
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being of this people. Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry ; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague.”
Matthew 6:16-18
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting . Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

National fast

A national fast is the abstinence from food by a country for a period. After Esther had saved the Jews, a national fast was put in place.

Esther 9:30-33
And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 127 provinces of Xerxes’ kingdom words of goodwill and assurance to establish these days of Purim at their designated times, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had decreed for them, and as they had established for themselves and their descendants about their times of fasting and lamentation. Esther’s decree confirmed these regulations about Purim, and it was written down in the records.

Fasting and national crisis

When countries face national crisis, they will call on their citizens to fast, to seek forgiveness and help from God. The Kings of Assyria and Judah called a national fast. Esther called on the Jews to fast.

Esther 4:15-17
days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” So, Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions.
Joel 1:12-15
The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree all the trees of the field are dried up. Surely the people’s joy is withered away. Put on sackcloth, you priests, and mourn; wail, you who minister before the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you who minister before my God; for the grain offerings and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God. Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat. Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah . The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.
Jonah 3:5
The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed , and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

The length of fasting

How long should a person fast? There is no biblical rule. Yes, God works with numbers, but he did not command anyone to fast for a specific number of days. The length of time may depend on the person, the objective and circumstances. Jesus and Moses fasted for 40 days. Why 40? The number 40 generally symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation. Some persons may choose to fast for an hour, a day, a week or a month. The persons who were sailing to Rome and encountered a terrible storm at see fasted for 14 days. There are some who believe that the Jonah Fast is the ideal. They say that the fast lasted for 3 days.

Matthew 4:1-2
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights , he was hungry.
Exodus 34:27-28
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant the Ten Commandments.
Acts 27:33
Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “ For the last fourteen days ,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food you haven’t eaten anything.
Jonah 3:1-10
Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

Fasting and prayer

In some situations, fasting is combined with prayer. The two can be a powerful force to address situations and seek the attention of God.

Acts 13:1-3
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So, after they had fasted and prayed , they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Acts 14:23
Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
Daniel 9:1-3
In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian kingdom in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So, I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting , and in sackcloth and ashes.

Fasting, sins, forgiveness and humility

A time of fasting can play an important role in considering the seriousness of sin in our lives. This may call for us to humble ourselves and ask God for forgiveness.

Nehemiah 9:1-3
On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads. Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors. They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God.
Psalm 35:13-14
Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
Psalm 69:10
When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach.

Fasting and seeking answers

Fasting may be needed to meditate and contemplate on serious situations. Daniel had a vision that was serious. He fasted as he meditated on the vision.

Daniel 10:1-3
In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision. At that time, I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips ; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.

Fasting in serious conditions

Paul and persons who sailed to Rome encountered a storm at sea. Their lives were in danger. They fasted. Persons may engage in fasting because they are facing serious situations in life; they may want to address problems in their lives, or they may want to accomplish things.

Acts 27:20-24
When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’

Private fasting

Fasting as mentioned in the bible was done by individuals. A person may choose to fast for different reasons. As a private decision and action; Anna, Cornelius and Paul fasted.

Luke 2:36-37
There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.
Acts 9:9
Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So, they led him by the hand into Damascus.
Acts 10:30
So, Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

Public fasting

Churches do engage in fasting. Church members are called upon and encouraged to fast for situations. Paul and Barnabas were sent out to preach, there was a fast by the church. Elders and church leaders were appointed in Asia, the church fasted.

Serious conditions may call for serious actions

Jesus taught the disciples a practical and important lesson. There are somethings in life that calls for serious actions and divine intervention. We will have to intercede with serious prayer and fasting. All prayers are not the same. There is, prayer, prayer and prayer. Jesus prayed all the time. When he faced death, the prayer was more intense. Also, the words of the Psalmist, explain the understanding of the phrase, there is prayer, prayer and prayer. “Hear my cry o God and attend unto my prayer…, when my heart is overwhelmed”

Matthew 17:14-16
When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Howbeit this kind do not out but by prayer and fasting.
Luke 22:44
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
Psalm 61:1-4
Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth, I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy.

Christian Living: Fasting Part 1

What is fasting?

Fasting is the intentional and voluntary abstinence from food or liquid for a period. The abstinence may or may not have an objective. It may be planned or driven by circumstances . Fasting is not famine, lack of food or being hungry. People may have a partial or complete fast.

Acts 27:20-22
When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved. After they had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: “Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss. But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.
Acts 27:33-36
Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food you haven’t eaten anything. Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.” After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.

Churches of Christ and fasting

Fasting is not a topic that is often taught and discussed in churches of Christ. Some members have not been taught and they do not know what the bible teaches on fasting. There maybe varied reasons why it is not taught. What are the possible reasons why we do not hear much about fasting in the church of Christ?

Personal beliefs about fasting

People have personal beliefs and opinions about fasting. These personal beliefs and opinions should not be law or command, Also, these beliefs, persons should not seek to bind them on people. These are opinions. Some persons may choose to fast. Some may choose not to fast. Some may believe that everyone should fast. Some may believe that people should not fast. God has given us liberty or freedom to choose on these matters.

1 Corinthians 6:12
“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 8:9
Be careful, however, that your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

Fasting, a command or optional

Fasting is not a command. It was not a command in the Old Testament, neither is it a command in the New Testament. People fasted because it was something good to do to achieve certain objectives. There is no scripture that say a person must fast. Traditionally, some cultures and religious groups fasted, while others do not or hardly do. Jesus said, the disciples did not fast, but the time will come when they will have a reason to fast.

Matthew 9:14
Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

The Jewish people and fasting

Fasting is not practiced by every country, culture and society. Fasting seemed to be part of Jewish culture. However, not everyone fasted. Jesus told the disciples when you fast, not if you fast. These words seem to indicate that they were in the habit of fasting.

Matthew 6:16
“ When you fast , do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

How often should people fast?

There is no command and stated number of times a person must fast. Since fasting is a voluntary and personal decision, persons may choose the time, duration and purpose. A Pharisee fasted two times weekly. Should his personal decision apply to everyone?

Luke 18:11-12
The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people; robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

Fasting, the disciples of Jesus and John
The disciples of Jesus and John seem to have differences where fasting is concerned. One was fasting often the other was not.
Matthew 9:14-1
Then John’s disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast so often, but Your disciples do not fast?” Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while He is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast .
Mark 2:18-20
Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So, people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?” Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast
Luke 5:33-35
Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.” Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast .”

The purpose and objective of fasting

People may have a fast for physical, mental, spiritual or emotional reasons. It may be people are facing serious situations in their lives, or they are seeking the attention of God. A fast may also seek to address serious situations and conditions. The purpose and objective of fasting may vary from one person to another. Some persons may fast because they are in the habit of fasting. They may have no objective. The disciples of Jesus were to fast because he was no longer with them.

Luke 5:33-35

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer ; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Chistian Living: Obedience

What is obedience?

Obedience is to do what is commanded, to comply with authority , to do or keep instructions , to be in subjection to authority. It is compliance with an order, request, law or submission to authority or what is instructed.

Luke 6:46
Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commands.

The burden of obedience

Obedience for some persons seems to be too much and demanding . Human beings react to obedience in different ways. Some are reluctant, rebel, and some question why they should obey. Some persons see Christianity as a burden. They see serving God and doing what he has commanded as a burden. Christianity to some is too much work, time and responsibility. Obedience seemed to be much work for Israel to serve God. Israel had a problem with obedience.

Malachi 3:14
“You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty?
Joshua 24:14-15
“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Obedience and humility

Obedience is not natural to man. Our human nature is to resist and do not comply. We must empty ourselves and cultivate a humble spirit to obey .

Philippians 2:5-8
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself , and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Obedience in the home

Children are instructed to obey their parents. Parents have a moral right to instruct children in the right ways of life, and the children have a moral right to carry out and do what parents instruct. Paul said it is the right thing for children to do, that good may follow them. Some children rebel and refuse to obey parents. Obedience has a reward.

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother" which is the first commandment with a promise. “ So that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Deuteronomy 5:16
Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Proverbs 6:20-23
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always upon your heart; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.

Christians and obedience

Obedience is not an option. Christians are expected to obey the instructions of God. Christians are expected to be obedience followers in living holy lives.

1 Peter 1:14-16
As obedient children , do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Jesus is our example of obedience

Jesus learnt obedience. Obedience is not natural to man. We must learn obedience.

Hebrews 5:8-9
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him

Is obedience necessary?

Society, the home and church cannot function without laws, rules and regulations. The laws, rules and regulations that are in society are to be respected and obeyed. What would happen if there is no obedience?

Judges 21:25
In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.

Partial obedience

People have the concept that it does not matter, what we do and how we carry out instructions from God. God requires full and complete obedience. Saul was instructed what to do. He partially obeyed God. It cost him his kingship.

1 Samuel 15:1-3
Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so, listen now to the message from the LORD. This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
1 Samuel 15:7-9
Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt. He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he destroyed with the sword. But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they destroyed.
1 Samuel 15:19-25
Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel. And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘ Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ Why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD?” “ But I did obey the LORD ,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the LORD assigned me. I destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.” But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice , and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the LORD’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them. Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD.”

Full obedience is necessary

God requires complete and full obedience. Full obedience is rewarded. Fear and doubt have consequences. Caleb fully obeyed. People who do not obey God are punished.

Numbers 14:22
But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.
Hebrews 3:18
And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

Obedience to authorities

God set up government for a purpose. Society cannot be left to itself. Are Christians required to obey the law of the land? When Christians violate the law of the land, are they not answerable to the authorities?

Romans 13:1-7
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
1 Peter 2:13-15
Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

Obedience and respect to church leaders

God set up his church with laws, rules and leaders. We are asked to obey them. Some people retaliate and refuse to do so. Why should members obey leaders?

Hebrews 13:7
Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
Hebrews 13:17
Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority , because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account . Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
1 Thessalonian 5:12-13
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

Obedience and salvation

The salvation of our souls depends on our obedience to the truth of God’s word. We are to do what God has commanded. When we obey God, he will bless us. He will forgive our sins and give us the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 5:32
We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him .”
Ephesians 1:13
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
1 Peter 1:22
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

Christian Living: Meekness

What is meekness?

Meekness is a mild, gentle, moderate, humble and submissive quality. Meekness is an attribute of human nature and behavior that has been defined as, inner humility and gentleness. It is a calm temper of mind that is not easily provoked .

Meekness is not weakness and softness

People often associate meekness with weakness and softness due to a misunderstanding of its true nature. Meekness is not about being a pushover or lacking backbone; it is a quality that combines strength with gentleness, confidence with humility, and assertiveness with kindness. It is the ability to remain calm and composed, even in the face of provocation or adversity.

The biblical view of meekness

The bible describes meekness as a virtue that involves humility, gentleness and self- control. It is the power to choose patience over anger, forgiveness over resentment and humility over pride. A meek person is strong enough to endure hardships without becoming bitter or vengeful. Meekness reflects a conscious decision to show restraint, and deal with life’s challenges and problems with a Christ like attitude. Weakness, on the other hand, signifies an absence of strength, capability and inner will power to deal with problems and life’s challenges.

Identify a meek person

How do we identify a meek person? Do people have identifying marks on their heads? The words of Jesus are true. “By their fruits you shall know who people are.” A meek person can be identified and recognized by their words, actions, behaviors and attitudes.

Matthew 7:16-17
By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

Moses was the meekest man

Moses was opposed and criticized even by his own family. He restrained himself. He did not lash out and display anger. Did his work as a Shepperd help with his meekness?

Numbers 12:1-3
And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.

Can meekness be tested and provoked?

The most humble and gentle person can lose his temper when he is tested, provoked and when people go too far. How far is too far in aggravating someone? Moses seemed to have too much of the complaining of Israel. He lost his cool, and that cost him entering the Promised Land.

Numbers 20:7-12
The LORD said to Moses, “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.” So, Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him. He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”

Meekness in answering people

People will ask us questions about our faith and spiritual things. Some questions can be silly and provoking. We need to be gentle with our answers.

1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Meekness in dealing with people and problems

Persons will encounter problems and disagreements. When we deal with conflicts and problems, we should seek to resolve them with a meek spirit and attitude.

Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Meekness and the Holy Spirit

People are converted to Christianity with their undesirable attitudes. The Holy Spirit can take those uncultured and rough attitudes and convert them to gentle and meek ones. This will take some time .

Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Meekness, the quality of a Christian woman

Peter instructed Christian women who are married to unsaved men, to win them with gentle attitudes and behavior.

1 Peter 3:1-4
Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit , which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Jesus was meek

There are things in life that are not right and will aggravate us. These things will test our meekness. Jesus like Moses was meek. He had a humble disposition. He encouraged people to learn from him and be gentle. Jesus chased the money changers and business people out of the temple. Was that a display of meekness?

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart , and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
John 2:13-16
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So, he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”

The meek will inherit the earth

Jesus in his sermon on the mount, quoted from the book of Psalm that the meek will inherit the earth, the land. Jehovah Witnesses use this to teach that people will live on this earth forever. Jehovah Witnesses teach that the earth will be cleansed on the Judgement Day, and the righteous will live on it forever. This is contrary to what Jesus and apostles taught about the earth and where the save will be on the Judgement Day. Could it be, inherit the earth has to do with the meek enjoying the physical blessings and prosperity of the land?

Matthew 5:5
Blessed is the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Psalm 37:11
But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

The earth is temporary

This earth was designed to be a temporary dwelling for man. This world is not our home. This earth shall be dissolved.

Hebrews 1:10-12
He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish , but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”
2 Peter 3:10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up .

We are pilgrims

We are pilgrims passing through. Our time here is limited. Christians look forward to their eternal and permanent dwelling place in heaven. Abraham and people of old considered themselves as passing through the earth.

1 Peter 2:11
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims , abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.
Hebrews 11:13-16
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth . People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country a heavenly one . Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them .

The promise of Jesus

Jesus promised his followers, the meek people, heaven as their permanent home. He did not promise them a cleansed earth.

John 14:1-3
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
1 Peter 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you

Our citizenship is in heaven

Christians have a different mindset and hope. The people of the world crave after physical and material things. They build and establish themselves on the earth, with the belief, that they will be on the earth forever. Christians live temporary lives on the earth, knowing that this life on earth will come to an end. They live with their minds set on heaven.

Psalm 90:10
The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Philippians 3:20
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
2 Corinthian 5:
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
Colossians 3:1
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Christian Living: Self Esteem and Confidence

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect, self-belief, self-worth, the feeling of being important and useful in a relationship or life. Self-esteem is an individual's subjective evaluation of their own worth and feelings. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself.

What is self-confidence?

Self-confidence is the positive belief in your abilities, judgement and worth that enables you to act with courage, resilience and conviction in various situations. Self-confidence is associated with self-esteem. Self-confidence inspires and motivates self-esteem. For the Christian, the source of that positive belief that makes up self-confidence is centered on God. Self-confidence is associated with the positive phrases; I will and I can,

Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Developing positive self-esteem

Self-esteem is a human quality and trait that is developed and natured. The development of self-esteem starts with you as a person. You need to build, shape, nurture and develop your own self-esteem and identity. You need to know who you are. Persons should feel comfortable in their own skin. This positive self-esteem is not based on conceit, pride and arrogance.

1 Corinthians 15:10
But by the grace of God, I am what I am , and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
Romans 12:3
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.
Galatians 2:6
As for those who were held in high esteem whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism they added nothing to my message.

The perception of people and self-esteem

People can influence and shape our self-esteem. What they think and perceive of us, can affect and influence our self-esteem. People will always talk. They will have negative perceptions. They will unjustly criticize, judge and find fault with us. People perceived Jesus and John in a negative way. The Corinthians questioned the apostleship of Paul. We should not allow what people think of us to define who we are. We should care more about what God thinks of us more than what people think.

1 Corinthains 9:1-3
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely, I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.
Luke 7:33-34
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
1 Corinthians 4:3-4
I care very little, however, if I am judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not vindicate me. It is the Lord who judges me.

Self-esteem and pleasing people

The self-esteem of people is affected because they seek to please people. They seek human approval, and to be in the good books of people. They seek to compromise to look good in the eyes of people. Thus, they have a low view and understanding of themselves.

Galatians 1:10
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Low self-esteem and confidence

Low self-esteem and confidence are often interconnected, as low self-esteem can lead to a lack of confidence in one’s ability and perceived worth. Persons with low self-esteem may feel inadequate and unloved. Low self-esteem may lead to negative criticism and perception of one’s self, abilities and worth. It may also lead to health and mental issues such as depression and anxiety.

What is poor self-esteem?

Poor and low self esteem are close and maybe used interchangeably. They refer to the state, quantity and quality of the feeling and perception of one’s self. It is the feeling of being unloved, unworthy, unwanted and unappreciated for who I am and what I do in a relationship or life. It is the feeling of shame, regret, despair and failure in a relationship or the things you do. The one talented man had poor self-esteem. Poor self-esteem makes us feel that we are not important, we are not as good as others, and we are destined to fail. It will also cause us to compare ourselves with others. Poor self-esteem will cause us not to try or be innovative. It will fill our hearts with fear and failure. The one talented man may have had both low and poor self esteem.

Matthew 25:24-30
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid , and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So, you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. So, take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Things that can affect our self-esteem and confidence

There are many factors that may contribute to a person having poor and low self-esteem and confidence. These things may contribute to poor self-esteem; negative criticism, comparing with other people, belittling, insulting, mistreatment, feeling inadequate, feeling unwelcome, physical, mental and emotional abuse, stress and anxiety.

Affirmative self-esteem

Affirmations are statements that we say to ourselves. These statements can shift our minds in ways that can make us feel better about ourselves and our lives. God empowers and gives confidence to his people to do, and accomplish great things . I am loved. I am worthy. I can and I am able. These affirmations enhance emotional and mental health, as well they build hope and confidence.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

The power of positive thinking

God created us with a powerful mind. We are what we put in our minds and think. If we think on positive things, and saturate our minds with wholesome thoughts, that is what we will become in life. If we think that we are important, we have worth and value, that is what we will become. If we think that we are no good and we are not important that is what we will likely become.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things.
Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.
Luke 6:45
The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

The effects of positive self-esteem

Positive self-esteem may impact and enhance our lives. How we feel about ourselves, may affect our health positively. Also, how people think, perceive and feel about us may have a positive impact on our life. Positive compliments can enhance our lives . Encouraging words and congratulations can build and motivate us.

Philippians 1:3-4
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
Romans 12:15
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Self-esteem and shame

The things we do in life can bring shame and reproach to our lives and family. Some people may handle the shame and move on, but others may not handle it well. Sinful and wrongs things may contribute to poor self-esteem and guilt. The guilt of betrayal caused Judas to look negatively at himself. He committed suicide.

Matthew 27:3-5
When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” So, Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Self-esteem, confidence and Christianity

Some persons are not proud to be Christians. When they are with friends and people, they feel ashamed and embarrassed. They do not have confidence to talk to people about Jesus. Why do people feel that way about Christianity and Christ?

2 Timothy 1:8
So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
2 Timothy 1:12
That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame , because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.
1 Peter 4:16
However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed , but praise God that you bear that name.

The impact of poor self-esteem

Too little self-esteem can leave people feeling defeated or depressed. It can also lead people to make bad choices, fall into destructive relationships, or fail to live up to their full potential. Poor self-esteem can cause despair, resentment, shame, depression, stress and anxiety. Poor self-esteem can affect family, love and relationship, togetherness, communication and sexual relationship. Negative criticism and telling people that they are no good and useless, can severely affect them. These negative things may affect their lives emotionally and mentally.

Patience and self-confidence

The Jewish Christians of the 1st Century were facing severe persecution. They were told not to give up and throw away their confidence and self-belief. The confidence they have should encourage patience. They should have patience in suffering.

Hebrews 10:34-36
You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence ; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Self confidence builds reliance on God

Judah faced mighty nations in battle. They placed their confidence in God to fight their battles. Christians should do the same. When we face problems and persecution, we should allow God to fight our battles.

2 Chronicles 20:1-4
After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat. Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.
2 Chronicles 20:12
Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you .”
2 Chronicles 20:15
He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘ Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.

Overcoming poor self esteem

To overcome poor self-esteem, we need to identify the causes. Decide that your life is yours and you need to take control. Start believing that you are important. Start doing and engaging in things that can build confidence. Surround yourself with positive people and thoughts that can build. Avoid negative people. Depend on God to give you strength and will power to do things.

Christian Living: Honesty

What is honesty?

Honesty is sincerity, truthfulness, fairness, loyalty, being trustworthy and straightforwardness of conduct and words. Speaking truth to one another has become a rear commodity in this world. Lies and dishonest practices have become the norm in this world. Christians are to live by a higher standard of honesty.

Ephesians 4:24-25
Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.

The impact honesty has on relationships

In life, we have all sorts of relationships. We have family relationship, marital, work and church. These relationships for them to survive, they must be built on truth, honesty, trust, reliability and confidence.

The signs of honesty

The actions and words of people can tell you who they are. Jesus said, by their fruits you shall know them. People who are honest are often; reliable, trustworthy, genuine and truthful.

Matthew 7:16
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?

Honesty is the best policy

What does the old saying mean, “Honesty is the best policy?” “Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb that means it’s best to tell the truth instead of a lie, even when it seems difficult to do so.

Be honest when we answer questions

Can we take people at their words when they speak or answer questions? People take oaths in court to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But they go on the witness stand and tell lies to perjure themselves. Ananias and Sapphira were asked questions, they were not honest with their words and answers.

Acts 5:1-4
Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
Acts 5:7-9
About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.” Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

Honesty in conversion

Not all persons who are baptized are honest. The parable of the sower as presented by Jesus, only one soil that displayed honesty. The other people (soil) did not last. They came and after a time they left. Some persons are not genuine.

Luke 8:15
But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Honesty on positive thinking

God created us with a powerful mind. Our minds control our actions. The things we meditate on will determine who we are in life. Paul encourages Christians to think on things that are honest. We are what we think and expose ourselves to.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Honesty in work

People pretend that they are working when they are not. They work while management eyes are on them. We are to remind ourselves, an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.

Ephesians 6:5-8
Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice , as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart

What cause or motivate people to be dishonest

There are many reasons and factors why people are dishonest. They do not want to expose themselves. They do not want to be caught. Some feel that dishonesty will help them get by in life. Some may feel that there is too much dishonesty in this world, so I can be dishonest too.

Honesty in business

When Christians are in business, they should be honest with their profit. They should not extort or extract more than what is needed. Their measurements and weights should be honest.

Leviticus 19:35-36
You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight, or volume. You shall maintain honest scales and weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Proverbs 11:1
The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.

Honesty and stewardship

Responsibility has accountability. When people entrust us with money and things, they expect honesty. Those who deal with and manage church money should be honest. They should have good reputation. Paul sent Titus and Timothy to Jerusalem with the contribution of the church in Corinth.

1 Corinthians 16:1-3
Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem.
2 Corinthians 8:17-24
For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative. And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel. What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift.

Honest Leaders

Persons who lead God’s people should be honest. Leaders should not be greedy and dishonest. The father-in-law of Moses gave him good advice.

Exodus 18:21-22
But select capable men from all the people men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Have them always serve as judges for the people, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
Titus 1:7
Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.

Honesty in worship and service to God

The worship and service we offer to God, it must come from and honest and sincere heart.

Joshua 24:14
“Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD!
1 Samuel 12:24
Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things He has done for you.

Honesty and friendship

People have friends. These friends are expected to be honest, reliable and dependable. People have expectations of friendship, including support, respect, loyalty, reciprocity, or connection. A sense of betrayal exists because the expectations of friendship are violated. When a friend betrays us, it can cause a range of negative emotions, including shock, anger, hatred, mental pain and anguish, loss, and grief. What will cause a friend to be dishonest? What impact can dishonesty have on friendship?

Honesty in marital relationship

People are married. They take vows, they make promises to be faithful, true and honest to each other. However, they become unfaithful and dishonest. Why do these things happen in marital relationships?

Proverbs 7:7-21
I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense. He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in. Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent. She is unruly and defiant, her feet never stay at home; now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks. She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said: “Today I fulfilled my vows, and I have food from my fellowship offering at home. So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you! I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning; let’s enjoy ourselves with love! My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey. He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full moon.” With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk.

Honesty in preaching and teaching the bible

Not everyone who teach and preach God’s word is honest. People have different motives. Some will wilfully and deliberately say things they know that are not biblically true. Why do people tell spiritual lies?

Philippians 1:15-18
It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
1 Timothy 4:1-2
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

Honest relationship and friendship

Our dealings, friendship and relationship, let us be honest and truthful. Dishonest persons are not good and health for relationship.

Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
1 Thessalonians 5:15
Make sure that no one repays evil for evil. Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people.
